Johannes 10:22-39

Dit was Inwydingsfees (van die tempel) in Jerusalem en winter.

It was at Jerusalem the feast of the dedication, and it was winter.

23 En Jesus het oor die pilaarstoep van Salomo gestap.

Then came the Jews round about him, and said unto him, How long

dost thou make us to doubt? If thou be the Christ, tell us plainly.

25 Jesus het hulle geantwoord … 30 Ek en die Vader is Een.

ἀπεκρίθη αὐτοῖς ὁ Ἰησοῦς … 30 ἐγὼ καὶ ὁ Πατὴρ ἕν ἐσμεν.

Jesus answered them … 30 I and my Father are One.

31 Toe tel die Jode klippe op dat hulle Hom kon stenig,

Ἐβάστασαν πάλιν λίθους οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι ἵνα λιθάσωσιν αὐτόν.

Then the Jews took up stones again to stone him.

39 en het Hom ook toe probeer vang,

Ἐζήτουν οὖν αὐτὸν πάλιν πιάσαι·

Therefore they sought again to take him :

The evening that begins the day of Nisan 14 is Nisan 13

Nisan 14 that begins the evening of Nisan 13 is the Lord’s Passover.  It is the day that leaven is removed from the home and the Passover Lamb is killed.  It is the preparation day for the Annual High Sabbath that is the first day of Passover – Nisan 15 that begins the evening of Nisan 14.

The evening that begins the day of Nisan 14 is Nisan 13.

Yes! The NIGHT- and LAST part that used to be Nisan 13, CHANGED into the first and day-part of what THAT DAY had become Nisan 14. BUT JUST THAT ONCE for the very first passover ever, in Egypt.

See in the sketch “end of 430 years” and of the old dispensation of slavery and bondage that through the passover had become the new era of freedom through the passover – “SUFFERING” – of our Lord Jesus Christ, ONCE for the last passover ever, in Egypt in hell in the Kingdom of the Father.

It is therefore that you will find Nisan 14 ONLY THIS ONCE in the Torah and all the Bible, seen as and named, the passover’s “feast” … 12:14. But already in verse 18, see the FIFTEENTH of the First Month IMPLIED for having become the PERMANENT, “Feast-of-passover”.

And he comforted them and spake kindly to them. 24 And Joseph said unto his brethren, I DIE : and God will surely visit you and bring you out of this land unto the land which He sware unto Abraham, to Isaac and to Jacob. 25 And Joseph took an oath of the children of Israel, saying, God will surely visit you, and ye shall carry up from hence myBONES—26 SO JOSEPH DIED being an hundred and ten years old : and [having been buried in a grave] they embalmed him, and he was PUT IN A COFFIN in Egypt…”

The Book of Genesis ended with Joseph’s burial day and future care of his bones—fulfilled in the Book of Exodus.

“BONE-DAY”

The first, all passovers after, and The Last Passover

Who have heard of the ‘BONE-day’ of the Suffering of Jesus? In KJV terminology, Who have heard of “the Selfsame Day” of the Passover of Yahweh?

Objection:

Bones and Selfsame Day are important topics in the scriptures. I’m not sure what you have in mind but let us know.

Here is a few on bones,

Ps 34:20 He keepeth all his bones: not one of them is broken.
Joh 19:31 The Jews therefore, because it was the preparation, that the bodies should not remain upon the cross on the sabbath day, (for that sabbath day was an high day,) besought Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away.

Joh 19:36 For these things were done, that the scripture should be fulfilled, A bone of him shall not be broken.

Heb 11:22 By faith Joseph, when he died, made mention of the departing of the children of Israel; and gave commandment concerning his bones.

Eph 5:30 For we are members of his body, of his flesh, and of his bones.

2Ki 13:21 And it came to pass, as they were burying a man, that, behold, they spied a band of men; and they cast the man into the sepulchre of Elisha: and when the man was let down, and touched the bones of Elisha, he revived, and stood up on his feet.

His Bones were not to be broken!

In die Eerste Maand op die veertiende dag van die maand

“… toe hulle uitgaan, kry hulle ’n [arm?] man van Cirene [’n “vreemdeling” in Jerusalem]  wat hulle Klip genoem het— ‘Simon’— ‘Klip’—  vir klipsteen “arm”? Geensins! ‘Klip’, vir “Die Wet”— “volgens die Skrifte” die Wet op kliptafels gegraveer— die pasga-Skrifte of “wet van Moses”, die ‘Torah’.

Hulle het hom “gedwing”

[Hier! Jy! Klipkop! Dis jou gerfie wat jy daar op jou skouer dra — soos toe – soos julle vertel – jou oupas uit Egipte gevlug het? Los daai gerf en kom hier! Kom speel dis jou gerfie hierdie … Sý paal, ja. Vir jou priester, hê? Arme drommel, tel die ding op en bring dit vir hom aan!]

Matteus skryf: “Hulle het ’n sekere Simon van Cirene wat van die veld // land af gekom het, gedwing om sy kruis te dra.” Markus vertel (1979 Vertaling): “Die soldate het (’n naamlose) ‘iemand’ wat daar verbygekom het, gekommandeer om Jesus se kruis te dra.” Markus moes dus eers op ’n later stadium uitgevind het, “Dit was iemand met die naam, Simon”; en nóg later, dat dit iemand – “Simon van Sirene” – was. En uiteindelik, dat hierdie man, pa was van blykbaar twee bekende lidmate van die jong Sekte van Jesus die Nasarener, “Aleksander en Rufus”.

Duidelik was Simon onbekend— maar net nog ’n “vreemdeling” wat dit in die materialistiese stad Sirene ‘nie kon maak nie’ en sy fortuin in die welvarende Romeinse staat van Judea kom soek het— presies die klas van mens vir wie dit in die LXX sê, die are wat geval het, gelos moes word! ‘ta apopiptonta toe therismoe soe oe sullekseis! Tooi ptoogooi kai tooi PROSEELUTOOI hupoleipseis auta!’

Die Hebreeus vir die Griekse, ‘proseelutos’, is ‘gher’, ‘sojourner’, ‘uitlander’, ‘immigrant’, ‘trekarbeider’, in nywerheids-eeu taal, ‘tydelike werker’. Maar van belang in evangeliese verband is hier, dat hierdie “vreemdeling”, “iemand” was wat “proseliet” van die Joodse geloof was wat getrou sy eerste gerf vir daardie pasga agter die eienaars van die land se oesters gaan loop “optel” het en “gebring het”: presies soos die Joodse Wet voorskryf!  Vergelyk Jakobus 5:4-6.

“Toe hulle Jesus weglei, gryp hulle ’n  sekere Simon van Cirene [’n Egiptenaar?] wat van die veld af gekom het, en sit die kruis op hom om dit  agter Jesus aan te dra.” Lukas 23:26. Markus 15:21

Simon van Sirene herinner aan Levitikus 23:22 en die “oes” of “afsny” / “kort sny” [“reap” / “shorten”] en “insamel” van die “oes” van “die kante” [‘hoeke’] van die “land” vir die “eerste gerf”. Daar het hy “are” [‘gleanings’] wat vir armes gelos word, “opgetel” of “versamel” vir sy “eerste gerf”— “eerste gerf” “van die oes // veld // land // aarde”— “eerste gerf” “aangedra” en “gebring” “vir die priester”— “vir Die Priester”, “Jesus Koning van die Jode” — “Eerste Gerf” “geoes” / “afgesny” / “opgehef” [‘asaf’ – ‘sullekseis’ / ‘sunakseis’ – ‘sullambanoo’ / ‘sullegohoo’] “aan die kruis”.

Lukas 22:53,54— “Dag vir dag was  Ek saam met  julle in die tempel en julle het nie die hande teen My uitgesteek [‘gegryp’] nie; maar [vandag] is dit julle uur [ of ‘dag’] en die mag van die duisternis. En terselfdertyd het hulle Hom gevange geneem [‘sullambanoo’] en weggelei en Hom in die huis van die hoëpriester gebring [‘eiseeghagon’ // ‘fereete to draghma’ Levitikus 23:12.

“Gryp hom” [‘epilabomenos’: “lay hold on” KJV]—

Eksodus 12:35,36 “Hulle het van die Egiptenare goed / goedere / artikels geëis”: “demanded from” [‘eeiteesan para’];

“Hulle het die Egiptenare berowe.” (KJ: “spoiled” / “stripped the Egyptians”) [‘eskuleusan’ uit ‘natsal’ Eksodus 12:36]

Hulle het Simon se “artikel” “geroof” en sy ‘eerste gerf’ (“op die skouer”) “afgeneem” en in die plek daarvan moes hy Jesus die “Eerste Gerf van die eerstelinge” se “kruis dra” en “vir die priester” – “Ons Hoëpriester” – “bring”.

Levitikus 23, “Jy moet die gerf bring”, ‘oisete’ kom van ‘feroo’, presiese sinoniem van “(aan)dra”, ‘areei’ – ‘airoo’ Matteus 27:32.

In Levitikus “jy MOET bring // dra”, Bevelsvorm; In Matteus, “hulle het hom GEDWING om te bring // dra”, eenghareusan hina areei”.

In Levitikus om die “gerf”, te “dra” of te “bring”.

In die Evangelies om jou (Simon van Cirene) ‘stauros’, “kruis”,

“op te tel” en te “dra” of te “bring” – ‘airein’ / ‘lambanein’ Matteus 10:38; 16:24.

“Soos Moses die slang verhoog het, so moet die Seun van die Mens verhoog / opgelig word” Johannes 3:14 (8:28). ‘hupsootheenai’, Hebreeus, ‘gaah’, Exodus 15:1, 21.  Levitikus 23:11 ‘anoisei to draghma’ “die gerf optel”.

Levitikus 23:11,12— ‘Oisete to draghma  kai anoisei to draghma tehi epaurion tees prootees [tou pascha] … kai poieesete en teei heemerai en heei fereete to draghma.’

Dit was “die eerste dag van die pasga”, “die veertiende dag van die Eerste Maand”, “wat hull altyd die pasga geslag het”; “suurdeeg moet verwyder”; en “die eerste gerf … afsny … en bring het”.

Simon van Sirene was geen toevaligheid of onsaaklikheid nie!

“Hulle het ’n sekere Simon van Cirene wat van die veld // land // oes af gekom het, gedwing om sy kruis te dra.”

“Oes” en “veld” of “land” is beswaarlik onderskeibaar. Vergelyk Openbaring 14:15—

“die oes van die aarde het oorryp geword.

[‘ekseeránthee ho therismós tees ghees.’]

Hy het sy sekel oor die aarde laat gaan / ingesteek

[‘Ébalen ho drépanon autoe epi teen gheen’]

en die aarde is afgemaai.”

[‘kai etherísthee hee ghee.’]

Johannes 4:35—

“die oes kom …

[‘ho therismós érgetai’]

“aanskou die lande / velde

[‘theásasthe tas gooras’]

“dat hulle al wit is vir die oes.”

Eksodus 23:16—

“Die oes” – ‘therismós’,

… is “die fees van die oes”, ‘heortéén therismóé’;

… is “die oes van die eerstelinge”, ‘heortéén therismóé prootoghenneemátoon’;

… “en die oes … fees van voltooiїng”, ‘kai heortéén sunteléías’;

… is “die oes … in die insameling”, ‘en teei sunaghooghééí’;

… is “die oes … van you arbeid”, ‘heortee … toon érghoon sou’;

… is “die oes … uit jou land / veld / grond”, ‘ek toe arghóé soe’.

Simon van Cirene het van die oes // oes-veld // oes-land // oes-werk af gekom, en hulle het hom van sy “eerste gerf oes”, “geroof” en hom “gedwing” om in die plek daarvan Jesus se “kruis” soos ’n ‘eerste gerf’, “te dra”— volgens die Wet “op die heel* eerste dag wanneer hulle altyd** die pasga moes*** slag” en die “eerste gerf” moes “aandra na die priester”.

Johannes 19:39 “By Die Eerste Nag”, ‘nuktos to prooton’

 

“Die” met hoofletter omdat “Die Eerste Nag” die NAAM van die nag was: Dit was “Dié” betekenisvolle, “Éérste Nág” van die Joodse pasga, hulle “Nag van Substansie” omdat dit die eerste nag was om hulle uittog uit Egipte te gedenk het.

 

‘Hierdie Presiese Nag’ [soos dit in die KJV in die Ou-Testament vertaal word: “The Selfsame Day”], gebeur baie, en gróót, dinge – soos Johannes skryf: “omdat dáárdie dag groot dag se rusdag (of) sabbat [van die Joodse pasga] was”.

 

Dit het inderdaad alreeds aand geword en die Voorbereidingsdag wat die Voorsabbat is, het begin.” Markus 15:42 Mattheus 27:57. ‘Kai eedee opsias ghenomenees epei een Paraskeuee ho estin Prosabbaton.’

 

“Omdat dit Voorbereidingsdag was [wat aangebreek het] het die Jode Pilatus gevra dat [die gekruisigdes se] bene gebreek moes word en hulle verwyder kon word.” ‘Hoi oen Joedaioi epei Paraskeuee een … eerooteesan ton Pilaton hina kateaghoosin autoon ta skelee kai arthoosin.’ Johannes 19:31.

 

Die soldate het daarom gekom en die eerste en die ander gekruisigde saam met hom se bene gebreek; maar een van die soldate het Jesus … se sy met ’n spies deursteek.” ‘Eelthen oen hoi stratiootai kai toe men prootoe kateaksan autoe ta skelee kai toe alloe tou sustauroothentos autooi; epi de ton Jeesoen elthontes … heis toon stratiootoon longgei autoe tehn pleuran enoksen.’ Johannes 19:32.

 

“Maar ná hierdie dinge …” ‘meta de tauta …’ Johannes 19:38 …

 

“… skielik daag ’n man met die naam Josef daar op … wat self (ingaan en) voor Pilatus kom staan en hom vir Jesus se liggaam vra.” ‘Kai idou aneer onomati Jooseef … hoetos (eiseelthen) proselthoon tooi Pilatooi eeiteesato to sooma tou Jeesoe.’ Lukas 23:50,52 (Markus 15:42).

 

“Maar Pilatus was verbaas dat Hy al dood was; hy het die hoofman oor honderd laat roep en hom gevra of Jesus al klaar dood was; toe hy dit met die hoofman bevestig het, het hy die liggaam aan Josef toegestaan.” ‘Ho de Pilatos ethaumasen ei eedee tethneeken; kai ghnoes apo toe kenturioonos edooreesato to ptooga tohi Jooseef.’ Markus 15:44,45.

 

“Josef het daarom gekom het en Sy liggaam weggevat”, ‘(Jooseef) eelthen oen kai eeren to sooma autoe’. Johannes 19:38c.

 

Waarnatoe?

Na waar Pilatus dit “(laat) skenk / aflewer het”, ‘edooreesate’ Markus 15:45, “beveel het (dat dit vir Josef) gegee / gelewer / gestuur moet word”, ‘ho Pilatos ekeleusen apodootheenai’ Matteus 27:58.

 

Waar was dit?

Waar “Josef die liggaam ontvang het en toegedraai het”, ‘laboon to sooma ho Joseef enetulisen auto’ Matteus 27:59;

Waar Josef, nadat hy “skoon linne gaan koop het”, teruggekom het en “die kadaver plat neergelê en skoongemaak het”, ‘ptooma katheloon’ (‘kathaireoo’, ‘neerbring’ en ‘reinig’), “en hom toegedraai het” Markus 15:46.

 

Dít was waarnatoe “Nikodemus toe ook gekom het.” ‘Eelthen de kai Nikodeemos.’

 

“Al hierdie dinge” – EN NOG BAIE MEER – binne enkele oomblikke nadat Jesus gesterf het, <dieselfde dag net voor sononder> waarop Jesus GEKRUISIG WAS EN GESTERF HET?!

‘Eelthen de kai Nikodeemos ho elthoon pros auton nuktos to prooton …’

“Nikodemus het toe inderdaad gekom— hy wat hom (Josef) voor (dit) by Die Eerste Nag [by die pasga-ete] teengekom het …” waar hulle toe natuurlik afgespreek het om mekaar weer te ontmoet om Jesus se liggaam vir die graf voor te berei “soos dit eties van Jode verwag word om te begrawe”—veral wat “HIERDIE PRESIESE EERSTE NAG” van “Ongesuurde Brood”, “BEEN-dag” en “Fees”, en “groot-dag-sabbat” volgens die Torah / Wet, aanbetref.

 

Om hierby uit te gekom het, moes ek sonder voorbehoud of bevooroordeeldheid of vooropgesteldheid, en so ver as moontlik, letterlik vertaal het— gevolglik TEENOORGESTELD die “belangrike rigtingwyser vir die kerk van vandag” om “… eerder as om die verskillende teksgetuies van die Ou-Testament teen mekaar af te speel òf aan mekaar gelyk te stel, [te] probeer vasstel watter verband (die verskillende teksgetuies) gehad het met die manier waarop ’n bepaalde godsdienstige gemeenskap HOMSELF verstaan het.” Ds Wouter van Wyk van RAU, ‘Konteks’ Jan/Feb 1999 bls.11

 

Ek stem net nie saam met die ‘dinamies ekwivalente metode’ van vertaal nie. Al hou <die manier waarop ’n bepaalde godsdienstige gemeenskap homself verstaan> hoe nou of hoe ver verwyderd <verband> met die – so na as moontlik – aan mekaar gelykgestelde Tekste, moet die <gemeenskap> en sy vertalers hulleself aan die Skrif onderwerp en nie die Skrif aan húlle, wil onderwerp nie.

 

Soos u in die besprekings vorig en hierby verskaf, sal sien, het die Sewentig met “Nag” vir “Been-Dag” in Exodus 12:40,41 vertaal.

 

“Been DAG” was “Die Eerste Dag (van) Ongesuurde Brood Eet” of “Die Eerste Dag (van) Ongesuurde Brood Fees”, en word in Exodus 12:40,41 “in Die Nag” in die LXX vertaal— d.w.s., “Die Eerste Nag” van die “Fees van Ongesuurde Brood”.

 

Ek herhaal [na aanleiding van my vorige insette aan u afgelewer]: As mens Johannes 18:28 lees waar die Jode geweier het om in Pilatus se huis in te gaan omdat hulle hulleself sou verontreinig het sodat hulle nie die pasga-ete in die volgende nag sou kon eet nie, sien mens daarenteen dat “Toe dit al aand geword het” Markus 15:42 Matthews 27:57 Johannes 19:31, dieselfde Jode nie gehuiwer het om Pilatus se huis in te gegaan het nie; wat slegs kan beteken dat hulle toe intussen hulle pasga geëet kon gekry het.

 

Ons het ook gesien dat die dissipels toe “dit nag was”, “voor die Fees”, Johannes 13:30 en 1, gedog het dat Judas “iets vir die Fees” die vólgende nag —“Die Eerste Nag”— “gaan koop” het.

 

Uit elke moontlike hoek beskou was Johannes 19:39 se “Die Eerste Nag”, “die eerste dag (wat) julle ongesuurde brood moet eet … die eerste dag van sewe dae (wat) julle ongesuurde brood moet eet” in die OT GENAAMD: “hierdie die PRESIESE BEEN-DAG” en hier in Johannes GENAAMD: “Die Eerste Nag” — van Ongesuurde Brood Fees natuurlik.

 

Dis HIER waar Josef en Nikodemus met mekaar afgespreek het wat hulle “Die Eerste Nag” verder, omtrent die liggaam van Jesus—TOE NOG AAN DIE KRUIS—sou doen.

 

“Die heel eerste dag van suurdeeg-verwyder” Eksodus 12:15, “die eerste dag wat hulle die pasga moes slag” Markus 14:12 Matteus 26:17 Lukas 22:7, “die veertiende dag van die Eerste Maand” Exodus 12:4 Levitikus 23:6 —— was “EERSTE eerste dag” van ‘pasga’.

 

“Die eerste dag (wat) julle geen gesuurde kos mag eet nie”, “die eerste dag (wat) julle ongesuurde brood moet eet” —— was tweede, “eerste dag” van pasga, dit is, “Die Eerste Dag van Ongesuurde Brood Fees”; ook genoem “sabbat” en “groot dag sabbat” of net “groot dag” [KJV, ‘high day’] van pasga— Let wel: GENAAMD “BEEN-DAG”.

 

In 19:39 skryf Johannes van Eksodus 12 se “Been-dag” se nag, en NOEM dit “Die Eerste Nag”.

Lukas verwys retrospektief na hierdie dag in 23:54 EN SOOS DIE HERE SEKER BESKIK HET in die KJV vertaal met “THAT DAY” … “DAARDIE”: “BEEN-DAG”! Wat het ek misgekyk? En het ek raak gesien?

 

Kan daar (naas “die dag Die Sewende Dag Sabbat-VAN-DIE-HERE-GOD”) ’n BETER GEÏDENTIFISEERDE “Dag” wees?! ’n ‘Bybel-dag’ wat nieteenstaande met die manier waarop die Christelike gemeenskap HOMSELF HUIDIGLIK verstaan — wat nie naastenby verband hou met die Ou-Testamentiese betekenis nie — <vertaal> word? Dis mos nie vertaling nie; dis die Woord van God by die mens aanpas!

Taken Down Before Sunset, or, Before Sunrise?

 

An unknown author quotes

<< Deut.16:6 – “But at the place which Yahweh thy Elohim

<< shall choose to place his name in, there thou shalt sacrifice

<< the passover at even [“ba ereb”],

<< at the going down of the sun,

<< at the season that thou camest forth out of Egypt.”>>

 

He asks,

<< What does the phrase “going down of the sun” mean?

And answers,

The author also quotes,

<< To understand what the status of the sun really was,

The author then asserts,

<<… Joshua was obeying Yahweh’s commandment … –

<< The body had to be buried the same day it was hung on the tree.

<< That means it had to be buried before sunset.

We wish to differ on several aspects.

First we must stress the fact we agree with the unknown author on the Nisan 14 (end of day) slaughter of the Passover lamb, and its eating in the night of Nisan 15. But this very Passover-arrangement is in contradiction with his ideas on the meaning of the Deuteronomy instruction as well as with both the Joshua passages.

 

Deut.21:22,23 – “… if a man be put to death … and thou hang him on a tree, His body shall not remain all night upon the tree, but thou shalt in any wise bury him that day” – meaning he must be buried the current day that had begun with “night” – during which the body had been hanging on the tree. It implies the body had to be removed from the tree before sunrise with the view to its interment during the following daylight!

Thus Joseph of Arimathea removed Jesus’ body from the tree far into night and very probably only before sunrise. “Thou shalt in any wise bury him that day” – which exactly Joseph did: during daylight of “that day”, after the day on which Jesus had been crucified.

<Shemesh> in Josh.8:29 is translated “sun” in the KJV, and per se means the rising of the sun – Gn.19:23, Josh.12:1 and many other places. (It is also used for other times of sunlight, e.g. Josh.10:12.)

The words supplied in Josh.8:29, “and as soon aswas down” – because the opposite of <ereb> – should be: “and as soon as the sunbegan to rise” <shemesh>. And the words supplied in 10:27, “going down”, should be, “at the time of the dawning / risingof the sun” <shemesh>.

See the close nexus between “east” – mizrach, and “morning” – shemesh, in the combination “early dawning” – mizrach shemesh. Compare the

s-h-a- in shachar, “morning” / “dawn”, and in shakam, “to awake” / “rise”, with the s-h-e- in shemesh, “sunrise”. Then also compare the

m-i-s-h- in mishchar, “morning”, and in mishap – “dawning of day”, with the –m-e-s-h in shemesh, “sunrise”. Now put the two together, and it becomes s-h-a + m-e-s-h, then becomes she-mesh. Then just to confirm this type of combination, see Dn.6:19, shepharpara, “very early in the morning”. Eth eber and shemesh it is clear, are the opposites of day-time and night-time, respectively “afternoon” / “towards sunset”, and, ‘afternight’ / “towards sunrise”!

Therefore in the case of Joshua 10:26,27, instead of to translate, “… and they were hanging upon the trees until the evening [ereb]”, rather translate, “… and they hanged them upon the trees while the sun was setting [ereb]. And it came to pass that at the time of the rising of the sun <shemesh>, Joshua commanded, and they took them down off the trees.” <Eth ereb> indicates the time of day of the hanging; <shemesh> the time of night of Jushua’s commanding.

We are compelled to conclude, that the phrases in the two texts, namely, “as soon as the sun was rising” <shemesh>, and, “at the time of the rising of the sun” <shemesh>, are NO equivalent Hebrew of “at the going down” <eth ereb / ereb> in Deut.16:6, where it is the rendering of the word bo, and, meaningfully, is used in conjunction with the statement, “at the sea” – which is to the west of the land and just the opposite of shemesh, “sunrise” in the east!

Joshua was obeying Yahweh’s commandment. The body / bodies had to be buried the day after they were put to the tree – after the night during which they “remained on the tree”. There is absolutely no possibility or implication the bodies could have been removed from the tree “before sunset” before “all (this) night”. And that means the dead had to be buried in the daylight following the night = “that same day”.

There would have been no sense in having the bodies hung just before sunset only to remove them, again just before sunset. Therefore, instead of translating like the KJV, “And the king of Ai he hanged on a tree until eventide [ereb]”, rather translate, “And the king of Ai he hanged on a tree before sunset [ereb]: and as soon as the sun dawned, <shemesh> Joshua commanded they should take his carcase down.”

In both events stone-mounts of such hugeness were built over the graves they “remained unto this day” – an immense task scheduled certainly for daylight and impossibly for night-time.

Indeed, just so, Joseph was obeying Yahweh’s commandment. Jesus’ body had to be buried the day after they hanged Him – in fact after the night in which the body “remained on the tree”. There is absolutely no possibility or implication the body of Jesus could have been removed from the tree “before sunset” of the day before – not before “all night” of the day that afterwards did begin – He “shall not remain all night”, but “before the sun had risen” shall be taken “down off the tree”, and “that (same) day” be buried.

That would bring the exact and full fulfillment “according to the Scriptures the third day” of the typology of the Passover as prophesied: Deut.16:6 – “But at the place which Yahweh thy Elohim shall choose to place his name in (i.e., in Jerusalem, in Jesus Christ!), there thou shalt sacrifice the passover at even [“ba ereb”], at the going down of the sun, at the season that thou camest forth out of Egypt.”

Then, o sinner, they lifted Him upon the tree “before the sun did set” and before “it was evening”, “so that the Scriptures might be fulfilled”: That was the sacrifice of Him. “His body shall not remain all night (Mk.15:42, Mt.27:57) upon the tree, but thou shalt in any wise bury Him that day”. “And after this Joseph of Arimathea came … he took the body down … and the women beheld how his body was laid … and the sun declined towards the Sabbath Day.”
